The Psychology of Self-Reward
What happens to your brain if you reward yourself?
Self-reward. Yes, you read that.
Nowadays, many people are obsessed with this thing, and become a hot topic among people, especially students. It does not matter if you’re a university or high school student—the same thing with people who work in the company now.
But why is it very popular nowadays and what are the benefits?
Let me just compare my life after giving myself a self-reward VS. without giving any of it.
Self-reward is one of the motivation sources for you after completing a complex task. This can also happen when you’re working hard and smart for tomorrow’s exam.
It can be by eating your favorite foods, going traveling, and spending alone time with good hobbies. Those are self-rewards.
Realize that rewarding yourself can level up your discipline as well as your intention to do the work.
For example, last week I went to my favorite coffee shops while watching psychology podcasts and having my lunch. My intention to study for my next exam increased as I did that and I started to study it without any planning.
I keep doing it over and over again after finishing each chapter of the subject and rewarding myself with different things.
That is, why you see many people are so diligent in doing their work and you start to label them as intelligent or hardworking people. It’s because they reward themselves after completing their task.
I found this surprisingly beneficial for me as a university student since I got easily stressed out and needed my solitariness to calm myself down.
You spend your time alone doing the things that you like or visiting new places to relax yourself. That’s what self-reward looks like. You are giving yourself to relax your mind for a while before working on another task the next day, rather than sitting at the table, doing the work continuously without having a break.
That’s why you easily burn out. As I mentioned in the latest newsletter – your brain is built to rest. You are a human, not a robot.
By doing this, you will realize that your intention, discipline, and focus increased much higher than you expected.
Just self-reward yourself. You deserve it.
